Tips About Tires and Tread Life Tire manufacturers estimate the tread life expectancy of their tires when they are operated under ideal circumstances. Things that contribute to abnormal tire wear (and decreased fuel economy) are: - Improper selection of tire including size, load, speed rating and tire type.
- Improper tire inflation pressure (regularly checked & adjusted as needed).
- Wheel alignment not optimized (and regularly checked).
- Lack of regular tire rotation.
- Aggressive driving style.
- Overloading the vehicle.
- Bad shocks & struts.
- Other worn suspension components.
Also there is a difference between tread life expectancy and tread life warranty. Most tires do not have a tread life warranty simply because of the many variables in tread life that are out of the manufacturer’s control. Those that do have tread life warranty will ask for documentation of regular alignment and tire rotation. They will also examine the tires for wear patterns that are indicative of alignment and inflation wear, and for physical damage and improper tire repairs. These manufacturers, if the customer can document that the tires were properly cared for, will make a consideration for tread life warranty adjustments. At Hart's Auto Repair, we want you to get full tread life expectancy from your tires. We will do our part by adjusting tire pressures, advise you of any abnormal wear if we see it, and by inform you what may required to do to correct any abnormal wear. Obviously, we need to see your vehicle on a regular basis to do this. It is recommended by most manufactures to make sure the tires get rotated regularly (every 5,000 to 7,500 miles), balance the tires as needed, ensure proper inflation pressure between services, and have the alignment inspected at least once per year. Tips About Purchasing Only 2 Tires Where do I install new tires if I only buy two? If you’re replacing only two tires, be sure to have the new tires installed on your vehicle’s rear axle. Here’s why: New tires will provide better wet grip than your half-worn tires. When new tires are installed on the rear, it helps reduce the potential for your vehicle to fishtail or hydroplane in wet conditions.
